Top Classic Games That Should be Remastered

In the mid-’90s and early 2000s, the best memories that I can remember were getting home from school on a Friday. Later that day we would head to a Blockbuster or a Hollywood Video store to rent a few games for the weekend. This was the highlight of my week and motivation for good grades haha. Getting together with friends or my cousins just to play the games we rented were great and full of laughs because we just had fun playing video games together. But it’s when you find a few games that raise the bar to a level that makes it even more enjoyable.

Some of the games we played started with the Sega Genesis, Nintendo, Super Nintendo, N64, Dreamcast, PlayStation One, PlayStation 2, and Xbox. Now I did not own all of these systems but my friends and family-owned some so you can imagine the sleepovers. The games that are being played in the year 2019 such as Halo, Apex and other top tier games are great, and that I can’t deny. But there is nothing better to a gamer then reliving the past with these old classic games.  Now that I am 31 years old and married, my time is pretty valuable to me.

The great thing about being a gamer in this modern age is the ability to play some of my favorite games from my past by them being updated and remastered. This is something many of the big game studios need to look into which some have already. Well, this is my list of Top Classic Games That Should Be Remastered.

007 GoldenEye

One of my Top Classic Games That Should Be Remastered is none other than the man and legend, Bond, James Bond. What can I say about this game? Many weekends with the cousins and my brother playing multiplayer lol. Remember the four squares on your TV and telling everyone “No screen peaking,” lol. Yeah, those were great times. The best time I can remember is when all four of us died and the screen would have like a red liquid come down like water on it slowly with the “duh nuh duh nuh da nuh nuh”(theme song) lol. Just imagine hearing that part like a broken record playing just that one part of a song. I really wish someone would bring this back.

So a little bit about this game. This game is a first-person shooter that was released for the Nintendo 64 on August 25, 1997, and it was based on the 1995 James Bond film, yep you guessed it GoldenEye. The game consists of three modes:

The single-player mode or story mode where you are in control of the British Agent and complete missions that coincide with the movie. There is an assortment of weapons from knives, pistols, shotguns, and others In order for a mission to be completed you will have to complete all the objectives given to you in that particular mission. Some of the objectives may include recovering documents, saving hostages and so on. You know things that a secret agent does.

The second mode is the multiplayer mode ( my favorite). In this mode, you can play with up to 4 players in total on different stages. You get to choose your characters to play as , but there are some you may have to unlock by completing the missions in story mode (singleplayer). There are other characters that you may play with that are not in the story mode. Characters you can choose from for example Odd Job, Jaws and of course James Bond.

The third mode is called Cheat Options. Now, this is where things get really fun. There is the DK mode which gives all characters giant heads. There is the infinite ammo cheat that allows you to have an unlimited amount of ammo. Last but not least is the all weapons cheat that gives you every weapon in the game.

In the multiplayer, there are at least 5 different ways to play. I’ll order them from my most favorite to least favorite.

Normal: Classic deathmatch.

License to Kill: One hit kills a player

The Man with the Golden Gun: One of the players must find the Golden Gun, and then pick up the gun, without being killed by the other player(s).

You Only Live Twice: As the name suggests, players only have two lives. The last person alive wins.

The Living Daylights [Flag Tag]: One of the players must find a flag, and then pick it up, without being killed by the other player(s).

There were also three ways you can play as teams: 2v2, 2v1, or 3 v1
This is a great game that needs to be remastered for all consoles.

Legend Of Dragoon

Now for my second top classic game that should be remastered is Legend of Dragoon. This was a great RPG in my opinion. I first had my chance to play this game at my cousins’ house when I went to visit. I loved playing this game especially since it was something totally different from other games I’ve played. Legend of Dragoon is set in the high fantasy land of Endiness. The game follows a group of warriors led by Dart Feld (the main character) as they are caught between a war of the nations. You as the player guides the party through pre-rendered environments and battles using a combination of real-time commands and turn-based mechanics.

This turn-based style uses quick time event like a mechanic called “additions.” How does it work? When you select the “attack” option from the battle menu, two blue squares will pop up on the screen and start to merge. If you time the button press just right, your character will be able to do additional damage to the enemy. As you continue farther into the game your characters will receive multiple actions and longer chains that will allow them to deal even more damage. But you would want to be careful because the longer actions allow the enemies time to counter-attack.

When they do the player will be given a different button to time and press to continue their attack. Each character will eventually gain access to their “Dragoon” forms. In this form, the characters get a boost in attack power along with alternate attacks, materialize armor and wings. The only downfall is that it lasts a certain number of turns. I would love to see this brought back for the PS4 Pro.

StarFox 64

This is by far one of the best games I have played as well. StarFox 64 is a 3d scrolling shooter game in which you control one of the vehicles piloted by Fox McCloud which is usually the Arwing. The majority of the game is played in (Corridor mode) which has you following a fixed straight path through the environment you are in. You may be able to maneuver a little in the path and slow down your vehicle temporarily. Some stages in the game allow you to choose your path and others like boss battles allow you the freedom to move freely. So it is not just following this path and that all the time.

In the Arwing, you can do somersaults and barrel rolls to dodge oncoming projectiles from enemies. Your ship is equipped with lasers and “B” bombs that you collect floating in the air. The other vehicle that Fox may pilot is a tank called the land- master. Both of these vehicles can charge their laser cannons to shoot a powerful lock-on laser. In the All range mode usually in multiplayer and some story missions you can make a u-turn also known as the up and over to change your direction.  In the multiplayer mode of the game, you are given three choices in which to battle: on land, you will be able to use the land-master(tank) or fight on foot, in the air, you will have the Arwing. The game was great when I played it back then and still is today. This will definitely be one I would push for to be remastered.

Battletoads/Double Dragon

Now I know that there is supposed to be a remastered version of Battletoads coming out for the Xbox on Xbox game pass. The game looks pretty good so far but I was hoping for them to remaster this baby right here. I can’t tell you how many times my brother, cousins and I played this game knocking one another off the map or dying in crazy ways Lol. This game was very memorable to me and we still talk about our favorite times when we get together.  Well if you are not familiar with this game then I’ll give you a little background on it.

Battletoads/Double Dragon is 1933 beat ’em up type of game that was developed by Rare and published by Tradewest. It is a crossover of both Techno Japan’s Double Dragon and Rare’s own Battletoads franchise. The game includes Billy and Jimmy Lee from the Double Dragon series as well as all three toads as playable characters.

How’s the gameplay? The player has a choice out of all five characters: Billy and Jimmy Lee, toads: Zitz, Rash, and Pimple. There are seven stages that you will have to play through punching and kicking your way to the boss at the end of the stage to challenge the player before moving to a higher level of the game. Note: There is a boss for every stage.

The one problem I would like them to change is the fact that once your continues overlap if you are playing co-op which means if one of the players decide to continue after he lost all his lives then that will bring both of you back to the beginning of the level.

Now some of these bosses are a combination of both characters from Double Dragon and Battletoads which gives you a good reason why the twins and the toads teamed up together to defeat the Dark Queen aka(main boss). This game was tough and very challenging and I still don’t remember beating it lol, but putting in the effort to try was laughable. I’m hoping the one for Xbox does well so they can consider waking this one back up again.

We’re Not Done Yet

There is no doubt in my mind that if these big studios would claim and confirm that they would bring these games to the next-gen consoles that are out now, I will be the first one to pick all four of them up. I’m not too fond of these online emulators or anything like that because nothing can compare to having a copy of the game in your console.

It is a great time to be a gamer with the technology that these video game studios have and the intelligence behind it all. If we push for the classics to be brought back in style it is possible that they will listen. Remember that money talks and great memories are priceless. So what are your top classic games that you think should be remastered? I would really like to know your thoughts.

Hi Conrad,
Nice choices! Starfox 64 is definitely a classic.
My favorite game is Final Fantasy VI, which I’m glad they released for Game Boy Advance because I probably wouldn’t have played it otherwise, having been born the same year the original came out and never having a SNES. Definitely awesome when old games get revived!

Have fun!

Hi Ben,
You know I couldn’t tell you which one of the games I have played. I know it was a few of those and they were great. What do you think about the remaster for FFVII?

Alex Griffith

Nice article! These are definitely classics that I’ll need to look into.

Conrad C.

Thanks, Alex I’m glad you like it. Well if your going for 64 I would go with StarFox and then James Bond.

Hey Conrad,
I really enjoyed looking over these old titles, I’m in total agreement with your opinions here.
Lets bring these classics back to life !
Thanks for writing this, enjoyed reading through.

Conrad C.

I was sure at least one of these someone would agree on haha. Glad you like them all. Takes you back doesn’t it?

In an age where everything is being remade, I’m all for GoldenEye being remade! I already got Spyro and Crash, all I would need is GoldenEye to round out my childhood.

Conrad C.

Those are some great games of mine also Zach. Your right about GoldenEye because I’m pretty sure most of us have at least played this or heard about this game when we were younger.
